96 Points on RateBeer Dry, pale, and aroma-forward American IPA brewed with wheat malt and Horizon, Chinook, Crystal, Cascade, Simcoe, and Centennial hops. IPA brewed w/malted wheat and six varieties of hops - Brewer IPAs brewed with wheat have unique characteristics which classic barley dominated IPAs lack. Too often adding wheat is a head and body game, the extra protein in wheat malt creates a fuller almost fluffy body and the head gets an extra boost of sustaining foam. But wheat also impacts the flavor of beer as well, of course. Wheat contributes a sweetness factor very different from what you would expect from your kilned and caramel malts. The sweetness is lighter and more subtle, noticeable in this IPA. The fruity hoppiness combines with the sweetness of the wheat malt to create a spectacular slightly toasted wheat bread and apricot jam illusion. Of course the beer is still an IPA so there is apparent bitterness in the forefront and after taste, but unlike other IPAs the bitterness is well rounded and does not deter from the unique flavor profile. - Cicerone

  • Sold By : Boom Island Brewing
    Belgian Dubbel | 8% ABV | 12.6% IBU

    Details

Rich and complex malt flavors combine with low hop bitterness to make this a classic Belgian-style Dubbel. Extra points if you detect a hint of banana and clove flavors hidden in its seductive aroma. "Midwest-made, but as good as the genuine right-from-Belgium article." -John Holl All About Beer. Caramelized bananas in the aroma along with a faint earthy note, cola and a low level of spiciness with a hint of clove. Toasty malt, with a flavor like singed wood. Good carbonation to help balance. Low residual sugar so that it has a pretty dry finish. Beautiful thing to have a beer be dry without being bitter! Very drinkable and a welcome departure from the bitter bombs of our current beer culture. Tempted to whip up a pork loin rubbed with Asian five spice blend just to try with this. Would probably go well with some desserts too: Bananas Foster, flan. The entire family got involved to construct the OG brewery and equipment, and their dedication comes through in the beer. Before opening, hubby and head brewer, Kevin, took an adventure across the pond to brew side by side with the Belgian pros and brought back the best kind of souvenir: yeast strains he uses to this day to make the beer we know and love.
